Sunderland Digital - Diversity in Tech

Sunderland Digital aims to bring together and enrich our burgeoning digital and creative community through a series of informal meetups and talks.

Diversity in Tech

Join us in November where we’ll be covering one of the most important issues within the tech sector right now, with guest speakers from 50:50 Future as well as a returning favourite!

Understanding Equality, Equity and Removing Barriers in Diversity & Inclusion
Lyndsey Britton-Lee & Lynsey Harbottle, Co-founders of 50:50 Future

With D&I we know that one off interventions and tick box exercises simply don’t work. We all create inclusion or exclusion and that’s why its really important to engage EVERYONE.

To create real change we must take an inclusive approach and ingrain it in to our workplace culture, ideally with the agenda owned at the top and led from the bottom up.

This talk outlines and explains the different phases in an organisation’s D&I journey so you can understand where your workplace sits in relation to Equality, Equity and Removal of Barriers. You’ll get insights in to practical tips for starting those conversations and examples of best practice for implementing change along with plenty of food for thought along the way!

AI Diversity - How to Avoid Baked-in Bias
Tom Moran, UX Lead at TH_NK

AI is an exciting new field still in its infancy, but already it has the potential to change our society and our relationship with technology. But there’s a problem, already some of the biggest tech companies in the world have accidentally produced racist apps, men-only machines and conspiracy-peddling nazi chatbots. How have things gone so wrong, so quickly?

We’ll look into how we teach AI systems about our world, why bias can appear and most importantly how you can avoid the same mistakes in your teams, apps and systems.
