ACTIVE VOICES - FREE COURSE FOR ADULTS.  [6 x weekly sessions]

Find out how to change things

Start something creative to get a zing in your community

Are you
…thinking about how to make the most of your time outside of work?
…in the middle of a major life transition? Or are you thinking about making changes in your life, such as working part-time?
…looking for opportunities to make your community a better place to live?

What is Active Voices?

Active Voices is a short course which aims to develop the skills and knowledge of people who wish to play a more active part in their communities. The course seeks to help people respond with confidence to changes in their lives in and outside of work.

If you attend the free course, you will have the chance to develop new skills, explore a range of interesting and topical issues, carry out practical projects, try new experiences, have some fun and, hopefully, make new friends.

No previous experience or qualifications required! All we ask is that you have an open mind, and a willingness to try new things.

What does the course cover?

The course will be facilitated by a tutor from the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA), with input from other people, including experts from Newcastle University, who are equally experienced in working with communities and with people who are experiencing a life transition.

If you sign up for Active Voices, you will have a chance to shape the content of the course. The course starts with a ‘getting to know you’ session and an introduction. In following weeks we look at how to: influence decisions in local communities; find out about what’s going on in your community; work with other people; communicate our work; and plan a small project.

If you attend the course, you won’t have to sit through boring presentations or slide shows. The course involves quizzes, games, practical exercises, and lots of discussion. Sometimes you may agree with what is being said. At other times you may disagree. But you will always have a chance to share your views.

How long is the course?

The course will last for 6 weeks.

Refreshments will be provided.

It is about doing and thinking. Dur-ing the course you can try out and test a few ideas. For example, if you want to start a campaign you can learn about communicating, designing and presenting an effective campaign.

Who developed Active Voices?

Active Voices is a collaboration between the WEA, Elders Council of Newcastle and Newcastle University, with funding from Comic Relief. Successful pilot courses have been held across Newcastle since 2017. Participants really enjoy the courses and many report feeling much more confident about taking part in their communities:

“I loved it, especially the ‘bouncing’ of ideas around the group.”
