Make the Most of Durham’s Coast

Make the Most of Durham’s Coast

Posted on behalf of Create North

Create North is working with Michelle Harland who runs Creative Youth Enterprise CIC, a creative social enterprise based in Seaham, to explore the potential for a hosting a festival celebrating the Durham coast in 2020. Michelle has been involved in great festivals in Hartlepool (Waterfront and WinterTide) and similar events in Gateshead and North Tyneside in recent years and thought that the idea of doing something exciting in East Durham, based on the coast would be a great idea.

Some early interest has been expressed and funding commitments made, and Michelle is now at the stage where she would like to build on this foundation by exploring with local artists their appetite for getting involved.

Create North is supporting Michelle in hosting this workshop to gauge the level of interest in the idea and to start thinking about how the creative community could collectively benefit from making it happen and what sorts of activities would make it appealing to the local community and to people from further afield. We’ll be running fun ideas generation sessions and creating lots of opportunities to network.

Interest in Durham’s Heritage Coast, established in the late 1990s after the closure of the collieries to beautify the area and protect its unique magnesian limestone cliffs, has boomed in recent years and is regularly featured in the national media. Now is the perfect time to make the most of this new profile.
